Lego Town Plan...yes or no?

I am looking at this Lego set and I am thinking about getting this for me and my oldest son for Christmas. What do you think, is the LEGO Town Plan too much stuff for a 5 year old and should I get something smaller? Remember, he doesn't have to build the whole thing, he can just build pieces of it and then use the rest of the bricks to create stuff with his own imagination.

I was also thinking of the LEGO Star Wars Darth Vader's TIE Fighter. Lego + Darth Vader? Can you get any cooler than that?

I don't know...which one would you get?.....Just imagine that these are both priced the same so that that is not a factor in your decision.

As I kid I loved legos, as a matter of fact it is probably the only kind of toy I had after I was older than 5

Lego Toys From 30 Years Ago Still In Use

When I went to Amsterdam recently I brought back a huge suitcase full of lego bricks. I have played with some of the bricks in that suitcase over 30 years ago.
I found the following 2 little cars in there:

Lego Fire And Police Car 1978

They don't make them like that anymore, these were from the following two sets

This was made in 1978 so over 30 years ago by now. I also have the train tracks which were blue before they made the grey colored ones. I had so much fun with Legos when I was a kid and hope that my kids will enjoy these little bricks also. Legos are probably one of the best toys ever made, the good thing about them is that you can use those old bricks with the bricks that they make nowadays, it will never be outdated.

Obviously I had some creepy ideas this morning to come up with this while playing with my kids
